I don't know that I would say corniER necessarily... I definitely think there's always been some kinda corny elements to it, but I don't mind that, and I haven't really noticed them picking up too much more recently. :-)

Yeah, I wasn't a big fan of Naruto suddenly becoming so adept at healing and protecting people with his chakra. It just doesn't seem like the best management of your characters to have one main character tread that far on another main character's primary utility, especially since she can't offer near as much in actual battle as Naruto or Sasuke. Plus, I always found the fact that Naruto could give every single ninja a cloak, subconsciously protect them all while fighting at full power, and protect them from something on the level of the Ten-Tails' Cataclysm a bit much even for the Nine-Tails' Jinchuriki.
