I had the unexpected pleasure of being invited to see Grace Jones last night at gay pride in West Hollywood. I had met her manager a few times in Paris, and so I was delighted when he reached out and said that Grace wanted to invite me and meet me. Iβve been in the room with Grace Jones before, but wouldnβt have dared introduce myself!
Iβve seen her play many times, and she was fantastic as always.
After the show, I got shuffled into her trailer dressing room where she was getting undressed, and recovering from the performance. Brigitte Nielsen was also in the room. I said my hellos, and did my best to express my admiration and gratitude. Meanwhile, freshly shucked oysters were being brought in for her aftershow mealβ¦good idea! Maybe Iβll try that sometime! π₯π I only ever thought about getting the perfect firm banana, a bottle of champagne, and a modest cruditΓ©s platter!
I didnβt stay in the dressing room long, I got the feeling that she and Brigitte were good friends, and I didnβt want to intrude or overstay my welcome.
I did not ask for a picture.
I took a photo of Graceβs famous hula hoop, and Maripol took a Polaroid of me.
In hindsight, I should have asked her to take a Polaroid of me and Grace. They seem to be very good friends, so Iβm sure she would have not been afraid to ask, like me!
There are lots of amazing people I admire, who are quite famous, and I never really ask for photos. I spent numerous times with Prince at his house, and I just always felt that it would be a violation to askβ¦.and I was always more interested in being invited back! Which I was. π
Now, thatβs not to say I mind taking photos with people who ask me. I think itβs just a little bit different with certain people who you can feel donβt invite many people into their inner circle, and or used to the photo being peopleβs first priority. And yes, I do decline if someone asks for a picture when they shouldnβt; like say, after a massage, during a facial, while eatingβ¦ I definitely have my boundaries, as we all should.
Anyway, I wish I had a picture of me and Grace to share with you, but I have a great memory, and this hula hoop is legendary!
