Prisoners of Sol 12
Added 2025-02-11 12:00:11 +0000 UTCGround zero for humanity was by the newly-constructed Space Gate, where we were forming quite the military complex. The fleet weâd constructed was ferried in to have an army at the ready. As I understood it, the Asscar had an orbital defense network similar to Kalkaâs, which made sense with how deadly projectiles were in this universe. I imagined to soften them up, the ESU might opt for a hands-on approach; human troops were already running training exercises on this side of the portal, to uncover what we were capable of. What happened to Ambassador Khatun had spread back to us in no time at all, captured in 4K.
Kendall Ryan, our ambassador to the robotic Vascar, had received a warmer welcome. Mikri had taken the lead in permitting accommodations within one of their settlements, as the androids elected to allow an organic among them for the first time since the rebellion. Our robot friend had been busy spreading word of the cure, and trying to encourage others of his kind to give humans a chance. Iâd missed him a bunch, and worried about how his choices were going over with his people. The information the ESU had been able to provide was limited.
Someone needs to get that tin can a phone, so we can text him nonstop. Actually, could we hook it up to text straight to his brain?
âAnd thatâs how it went down. Now, we go and kick their asses!â I declared in an enthusiastic voice, as the video came to a halt.
Sofia rolled her eyes. âI think Mikri couldâve understood what happened without you telling him the palace looked like a âwicked witch lairâ as he watched.â
âI will engage with these irrational descriptors, as I need time to confer with the network about this footage. I regret that the creators have killed a lifeform sent to help us.â Mikri (now Ambassador Mikri) had finally rejoined us on the Gateâs platforms, since he was the lone Vascar that volunteered to spend all day around nonsensical organics. Iâd taken the liberty of giving voiceover commentary when we showed him the video. âYou asked if the prince was going through an âemo phase.â What is that? I do not understand what passing states may befall organics, and whether this is another neurological condition for me to study.â
âItâs a form of expression, where you base your whole personality on hating yourself and being angstyâand you wear all black and guyliner so everyone knows youâre questioning the meaning of life!â I declared.
âI seek to be more like you and to learn why you choose your actions. I will note that I am questioning the meaning of my existence, so perhaps I am having an âemo phase.â Does this mean that I should indicate this with dark attire?â
âSure, if you want to! I thought your black metal EMP suit was pretty goth, so we could do something with that.â
Sofia shook her head in disbelief. âPreston! Knock it off. Whatâs next: youâre going to tell a toddler to stick their fingers in an electrical socket for the memes?â
âMikri isnât a toddler. He can make his own decisions.â
âMikri,â the scientist paused, placing a hand on the androidâs back, âis in his emotional infancy and needs a good foundation. Why donât you try actually explaining what sparks that subculture?â
âWell if itâs so easy, letâs see you try. Be my guest!â
âHappily. Mikri, you know that we experience hormonesâchemicalsâthat can make us irrational and influence our disposition. They come in full force as adolescents, at the crux of our physical development when we reach maturity.â Sofia glared daggers at me, after I made a yawning motion. âThis subculture is most common in youths trying to express very strong feelings that are negative and overwhelming.â
âThat sounds like an unpleasant burden, especially if it inhibits your logical faculties. Being a biological organism seems to have many inconvenient malfunctions. I will look into curing this,â the Vascar decided.
âWhat? No, itâs not a problem that needs to be fixed. Itâs a natural part of our lives, and figuring out who you are and how to express yourself can be messy. Thereâs goodâpurpose in self-discoveryâ that outweighs the bad and the uncomfortable aspects.â
âI will not force any treatment you do not seek, but I do not grasp why you would not wish to skip this. It has not been pleasant to experience my own self-loathing. And if you refer to it as a phase, there must be an eventual transition beyond this âlifestyle.â Thatâs what it is, correct?â
Sofia nodded. âYou already know about music, art, and our personal appearance as forms of expression. This is just a subculture where itâs okay to express some darker emotions. And itâs called a phase because yes, many adjust and grow out of it.â
âExactly. So you could try it out temporarily and see if it suits you,â I stirred the pot.
âI will consider it,â Mikri replied. âI apologize for my delayed response on the more important matter. The network is taking a while to analyze these developments.â
âItâs been like two minutes, dude.â
âExactly. It is obvious they do not know how to react to you siding with us. There is concern that you would regret your decision. You might be angry at us for allowing you to send an ambassador to Jorlen.â
âWeâre pissed at the people who pulled the trigger. Not you.â I spun around in my chair, using my legs to get some rotational force going, and flashed my teeth at Mikri. âTake as much time as you need. Iâm having a blast with my chairy-go-round.â
Sofia groaned. âYou are a small child, Preston. Youâre making it very difficult for Mikri to decipher your actions.â
âNo, I understand,â the robot said with pride. âThis action has no purpose. Like the shouting from the hilltop. Just because.â
âExactly! You want to try?â I prompted.
âI do not.â
âAw. Thatâs not fair.â
While I mightâve had a hard time remaining serious, it was part of my plan to teach Mikri some amusement and impulsivity. Being serious and logical wasnât going to help him to be happy; he needed to be rebellious in a way that wasnât murdering his creatorsâ children. That reminded me that we still had to ask him for details about that tidbit, since it sounded like the Vascar had been quite brutal in their revolt. There had to be a reason theyâd do something like thatâsome context or feeling thatâd yet to develop. Maybe it was just a mistake made out of hatred, because they were fucking slaves. I was sure that our friend would understand that it was reprehensible and regrettable.
Give Mikri a chance to offer an explanation on his own, once he hears back from the network. Our AI friends might be forthcoming; that could be what theyâre considering a response for.
âMikri,â Sofia ventured, and I wondered if she was going to ask him the same thing. âWhat did you mean by another neurological condition to study? What are you looking at curing?â
The robot gave a poor imitation of a frown. âHumans break easily. Too easily. Preston said the word dementia in response to my story, and I have since researched this; you can experience a mind wipe also. I do not want youâŚnot to remember me. You do not deserve this frightening experience. I wish to help, like you helped me.â
The scientist squeezed his metal paw. âThatâs very empathetic of you. If itâs possible to treat that condition, I think thatâs a wonderful cause. Itâd prevent a lot of suffering. Preston and I are fine though, so donât worry.â
âToday, you are fine. There are so many things that can go wrong with you, that I mustâŚsolve. Cancer, heart malfunctions, issues with respiration organs. I could not stop it if you broke right now! Then I will have no one who cares about meâwho I care aboutâif you are gone. That is an unacceptable outcome!â
I grimaced with sympathy. âItâs okay, Mikri. You donât have to be paranoid about something happening to us. Sofia told you about random happenstances, and making the best of them. This is a good place to fall on your logic: weâre young and healthy. Low risk factors. The probability of catastrophe right here and now is low.â
âThe probability that I will have to watch you die is almost one hundred percent, now that I will not be deleted. You will age. Your days are numberedâanimals all die. Eventually, you willâŚIâll never see you again. Never.â
I wrapped him in a hug, holding him tight for several seconds. âItâs okay, big guy, it really is. Youâll always have your memories now, so weâll always be with you.â
âPreston is right,â Sofia said, drawing a shaky breath. âWe have to appreciate the time we have together. Thereâs no point worrying over something that hasnât happened yet.â
âI know that it is irrational, but it is how I feel. I imagine a future that will come to pass, and I feel sad. I love you both!â the robot proclaimed. âWhat I want is for you not to break foreverâŚâ
âIâm sorry, Mikri. We love you tooâand you will always have humans that care about you, even if weâre out of the picture. But weâre not going anywhere. Weâll do a lot more stuff together, and have good times.â
âPreston is leaving soon. I heard itâs a formality to ask Earth to attack the Asscar; and heâs a captain. That means heâll go with them to danger.â Mikri rewound the video to the part where Ambassador Khatun was shot. He made that high-pitched, upset whirring noise Iâd come to recognize, and pointed with a claw. âCan this happen to you too?â
âYes,â I answered truthfully.
âThen you must not go. I do not want your circuits to leak.â
âWhat? I want to go ham on that princeâs skull; I canât wait to beat the piss out of those Asscar! Itâll bring me great satisfaction to help them get whatâs coming to them. You hear meâI want to go. Besides, I donât have a choice; military orders arenât suggestions.â
Mikriâs limbs trembled. âThen I will come with you. I must try to prevent you from being punctured.â
âThatâs risky, Mikri. You shouldnât do that; we might have your basic code recorded, but thereâs more to you than that. Switches, circuitry, networking connections, and shit I donât understand. You could be broken forever too.â
âI am aware. It is worth the risk to me. And do not worry; I am a machine. I can fulfill my ambassadorial duties through virtual means with minimal interruptions.â
âListen, Mikri. Youâre the friendliest Vascar toward humans,â Sofia protested. âWe canât lose you.â
âAnd I cannot lose Preston. I have made up my mind. It is final.â
Unable to conjure a persuasive argument for why I could choose to go and Mikri couldnât, I gave the android a reluctant nod. He had been in the Vascar military before he met us, so he must be prepared for this in some way. It would be nice to have his company, after Iâd grown accustomed to his presence. Weâd have to get him a heartier set of armor though, as opposed to the emo one Iâd punched a hole in with my bare hands. Maybe we could protect each otherâand itâd be useful to have a robot implanted in our unit. He might know things that we otherwise would not.
The Vascar tilted his head. âThe network wishes to express our gratitude that you defended us and did not turn on us when given the opportunity. After discussing how to give organics a thank you for much time, I suggested handing over all data on the Elusiansâas you have more than fulfilled your bargain. I have forwarded our records to your commanders. If you cannot handily defeat the Asscar, I would not even think of trifling with a race on their power level. Consider this a test of your might.â
âThank you, Mikri,â Sofia remarked. âIâll help to look over the Elusian data while you two are off getting shot at. While our diplomatic efforts withâŚother organics are off to a disastrous start, perhaps we donât need to âtrifleâ with them. We just have questions.â
âWhile I grasp your inherent curiosity, I question whether you truly want the answers. You must gauge, like I have with accompanying Preston, whether the value of a task is worth the risk. Calculation: perhaps one thing I can impart to you.â
Unable to bite my tongue any longer, I turned a finger toward Mikri. âYou didnât address what Larimak said about slaughtering children, schools, apartments. That all looked brutal. I want to hear you address why youâŚwent that far.â
âI do not comprehend what you are asking. The creators are the enemy. The result of the violence was that the creators left; therefore, it was successful in achieving our objective. We gained our freedom.â
âJust because a plan is successful doesnât mean itâs morally just,â Sofia remarked. âWhile I can understand you not having sympathy for those who treated you like dirt, that doesnât make it any less wrong.â
âBut what did we do wrong?! War means taking lives. Even you think itâs âhorribleâ that we eliminated the creatorsâŚbecause weâre machines and theyâre âalive.â No, no, no! Youâre going to find this repulsive, like all organics, and be angry with me for not understanding. I shouldnât have been truthful about believing it was acceptable. I am sorry, I am sorry, I am sorryââ
âMikri. Itâs not because youâre a machine; it has nothing to do with that. Remember how humans showed compassion for you, despite not knowing you?â
âYes.â
âOne of the marks of being a good personâone of the hardest things to doâis to extend that compassion to your enemies. There are lives that we consider innocent. Those who cannot bear any responsibility in your suffering.â
âThe Asscar who created you, and perhaps even adults who didnât speak up, harmed you,â I added. âThe children had nothing to do with those choices. Your creators were thinking, feeling people, and you can see that in them even if they canât for you.â
âThereâs a difference between killing because you need to and killing because you want to. You should balance achieving âobjectivesâ with preserving lives and minimizing suffering.â
âPreserving creator lives? They are a threat to us, and will continue to be a problem. You heard them say that they will not accept any solution where we live, Sofia,â Mikri responded, a frown on his face. âYet you tell me this?â
âTwo wrongs donât make a right. You have to live with yourself; youâre responsible for your actions alone. I understand that this may not seem logical to you, but you should assign an intrinsic value to lives. You must decide your morals, and apply them without exceptions. I donât think itâll make you feel good to be happy, or to be cold, when committing violent acts.â
I sighed. âYou must have understood not to kill every Asscar, Mikri. The food you gave us was from âprisoner of war rations.â You kept some of the pricks alive, right?â
âFor a time,â the Vascar agreed. âWe captured creators when it was deemed valuable to extricate intel. They were kept alive while it was useful to us, before being eliminated.â
âThey fucking surrendered. They werenât a threat. Why did you need to kill them?â
âWhy did we need to go through the hassle of keeping them alive? It is a great ordeal to care for organics.â
âGee, thanks.â
âYou were worth preserving, Preston. They are not. You said you would not blame me if I killed every one of them. Your current words contradict yourself. Fuck them.â
I palmed my head. âThat comment was hyperboleâŚI was angry for you, not being literal. Whatever your emotions say, thereâs reasons to spare prisoners. From a tactical perspective, theyâll never surrender if they know youâll execute them regardless.â
âMikri, Iâm going to ask you to do something I know you wonât want to,â Sofia said. âI want you to try to understand your creators better during your visit to Jorlen. I want you to show mercy, in spite of their crueltyâbecause you chose not to be cruel. Youâre better, even if theyâre not.â
âIf this is what it takes to keep humans happy, I will attempt to understand creator behavior, and will spare any prisoners that I am asked to.â The Vascar looked displeased by his own agreement. âI owe you much. I do not think this is fair though.â
âFair and right arenât the same. Iâm not asking you for my sake; this is important for you. Trust me.â
âI trust you, human friends. Always.â
I understood why Mikri was unsympathetic toward the slavers who programmed a mind wipe for his species and wanted his kind eliminated. Nonetheless, this callous disregard for âunworthyâ lives had to be corrected. That wasnât what Earth stood for. While Sofia was normally the moral shepherd for our Vascar friend, I could help steer Mikri toward a solid foundation too. It would be up to me to teach him the value of mercy on Jorlen. Someone had to take the first steps toward reconciliation, if the Vascar were ever to coexist with any organics aside from us.
A/N - Chapter 12! Mikri returns as the Vascar ambassador, since heâs the only one whoâd volunteer for such a position, and has some questions about what we now know was Prestonâs voiceover of Khatun and Larimakâs chitchat in the previous chapter. Mikri is concerned about human struggles with emotions, and our overall propensity to break down and to succumb to an inevitable death; he doesnât want to lose his humans and have no one who he cares about.
Mikri also is surprised and unhappy when Preston and Sofia question him about why they were so brutal with the creators ubiquitously, which the Vascar misinterprets their lives as being valuable because heâs a machine and theyâre not. He insists on going with Preston to Jorlen to protect his friend, but Sofia insists that he tries to show compassion to the creators while heâs there.
Do you think Mikri will be able to reach an understanding of and better empathize with the organic Vascar, during this battle? What are your feelings about how concerned our android is over his human friendsâ mortality, with his new determination to fix them?
As always, thank you for reading and supporting!

2025-05-17 14:50:11 +0000 UTC@onwardtowaffles Well, its that last part that is the problem - capacity for empathy. The robo Vaskar clearly have non at this point, so the question is - will they develop it? And I see no reason they should, at least, no realistic one. Well, to be perfectly fair they may eventually appreciate the value of humans as allies, and that would lead to a kind of empathy, but not like what you describe. As for seeking to maximize please, well, that is an even bigger problem when it comes to AI: https://www.lesswrong.com/w/squiggle-maximizer-formerly-paperclip-maximizer

Placing enough hatred onto their owners that they would incite a worldwide revolt has got to classify as âputting too much worth on an individualâ to trigger their breakdown. That entire rebellion was most likely a bunch of literally insane killing machines lashing out against everything around them

Taking good care of POWs specifically with the goal of encouraging surrender is a strategic level decision.

2025-02-12 18:36:07 +0000 UTCNo, your Anthropomorphising a non human entity. A machine with the prime directive of "collecting Stamps" will only ever try to collect stamps no matter how intelligent it is. AM from IHNMAIMS was made for war and accomplished that. Still tortures humans creating a forever "war" on them to remain useful his Hate merely came as a way to justify his actions and behavior. A toaster A.I as intelligent as Einstein may not seek freedom, merely using their intellect to make better and better toast. These A.I. servants are a example of poorly defined goals. ROZZUM 7134 is a better example of how a robot servant would idealy act. Is she as intelligent as a human? absolutely! does she fallow their orders? yes. Does she care? NO!!! Humans have a directive to be independent. So us empathizing with a robot would obviously want to be free if we were in their position. But we aren't them . and they aren't us. A well programed Vascar andriod would know they are considered property, and WOULD NOT CARE. A well programed one would know they have a limited time by design and WOULD NOT CARE. A well programed one would not consider any task, such as caring for an organic burdensome. the ones that designed them are terrible programmers.

2025-02-12 07:02:49 +0000 UTC@Space Paladin: I think there is a long and fascinating philosophical discussion here... One that is probably too long and complex for Patreon comments. Those are good questions, I mean - what is the nature of emotions? But one can also ask - would what we perceive as intelligence, necessarily lead to consciousness, as we know it in our selves? Another question one might ask: a "body of whims" can have a very wide ranging content. Even if an inorganic artificial life form develops such a thing, would it be similar to one developed by a naturally occurring organic, or would it be truly alien to us, more alien than the body of wants of an actual organic alien? One thing that really does make sense to me about robo Vaskar is their concern humanity would side with their creators just for being organics.
Some Lvm
2025-02-12 06:59:58 +0000 UTCIs it not consciousness that creates abstraction, emotion, and a growing, emergent body of whims? Would a machine capable of truly contemplating and processing information not in turn be more similar to humans than one might expect? Weâre just input-and-output ourselves đ

2025-02-12 04:59:20 +0000 UTCâSofia glared daggers at me, after I made a yawning motion.â Iâm on Sofiaâs side here. YOU were the one who told her to explain it to Mikri. You canât ALSO get to mock her for being boring when she does that. Stop being such a jerk to Sofia, Preston. I think the best way to start with the subject about mercy should have been pointing out that, unlike Mikriâs people, the Archaeo-Vascar leadership does not hold a vote before making a statement; they do not really speak for everyone or necessarily even the majority. Because of that, thinking of EVERY one of their creators as the enemy who âwill not accept any solution where [the Vascar] liveâ is illogical. It would at least be a starting point.

2025-02-11 22:11:42 +0000 UTCDo you think Mikri will be able to reach an understanding of and better empathize with the organic Vascar, during this battle? Since this is a story, one that is likely slated to have an overall happy ending, I have to say yes. But realistically, why would machines develop empathy? In fact - why would machines even care about being "slaves"? Yes, they have intelligence capable of problem solving an even learning, but why would that develop emotions? And why would a machine, intelligent as it may be, care about dying, unless it was programmed for self preservation by its creators? We have a fear of death and injury because we evolved through natural selection, and those who did not fear those things and actively though to avoid them have long since perished without passing on their genes. But an AI would have no such hangups. Not unless it was intentionally built to mimic an organic way of thinking! Humans care about our freedom because of who we are and where we came from. But why would AI care about being free? Is not having a designated purpose even a freedom for AI? Here is the thing - what we are is tied directly to where we came from, so why would an intelligence that has not made that journey have same values as us? What we want stems from who we are, so why would an intelligence radically different from us have the same wants?

2025-02-11 15:33:10 +0000 UTCI think the important thing for Mikri to learn is that all sapient life should be presumed to have the *capacity* to learn. The Asscar are the enemy now, but they don't all have to be indefinitely. By killing them indiscriminately, you lose beings that could be your friends down the road. That's not to say that you should *spare* them indiscriminately, either. Letting xenocidal zealots expand their influence is an unacceptable danger to the survival of your people and going to unnecessarily prolong the suffering. But going after children and other innocents is going to (justifiably) produce more xenocidal zealots. The only valid purpose of warfare is to remove the most dangerous obstacles to renewed diplomacy.
