The competitive D&D is the inspiration for the Role-Player's Game Association (RPGA.) Before it went away in the late 90's/early 2000s, it took competition gaming from who solved the puzzle best to who did roleplay best. It also introduced me to more than just D&D. As more and more games came online, the best way to demo them was to play them as a competition module. Paranoia, Torg, Shadowrun, and many other games had these short, run-in-four-hour modules with 6-8 pregenerated characters for competition. The GM (called the Judge in those days) not only evaluated the players, but was he/herself also evaluated on how well they evolved the story. This was a worldwide phenomenon, and made GenCon the RPGA convention to go to. Some of these modules would take multiple rounds, a pyramid competition where several tables of part 1 of the story early in the con, and the top 2-3 people would go on to part two of the story. The most parts that a tournament would have is four, one of which was the Slave Lords series from first edition AD&D.
