Thanks so much for all of the info! I remember first learning about Yeonsangun when we first started watching Kdramas. I HIGHLY recommend watching "Rebel, Thief Who Stole The People." He was the king in that drama and I was like, this is absolutely insane. But when I looked it up, everything he was doing was accurate and I was absolutely horrified. That drama combines that king with the legend of the strong child and Hong Gil Dong. REALLY good drama. When we were re-watching the episodes of Bon Appetit with my brother, he saw the courtesan and was like, "Oh! So she's Honey Lee!" (Lee Ha Nee played the courtesan part in Rebel. We haven't seen it in so long, but we're remembering a lot because of what's happening in the drama, so thanks again for posting the info so we can have the refresher! I knew it was supposed to be the same king, and that's why we were wary of watching it when it first came out, but it's good that they are changing the names and adjusting some things so it's not REALLY trying to glorify/sympathize with a Tyrant king. The first episode is so cute so far so hopefully we keep going along this way!

Yeonhuigun (Yeonsangun in real history) was the name/title that was given to him only after he was deposed. Unlike other kings, he did not get a temple name because he was a despotic ruler and was deposed in a coup. That is why his name ends with "gun". Gun means prince. Hence, Yeonsangun means Prince Yeonsan. The temple names of other kings end with "jo" or "jong". Yeonsangun did not get that honor.

The real king did evict people from a large residential area to create his personal hunting ground (the forest where JI-yeong lands in) and he also had women from all over the country brought to him. That is real history. They just changed the names of the main characters a bit—probably to avoid the same kind of flak that Mr. Queen got. King Yi Heon (Yeonhuigun) is based on King Yi Yeon (Yeonsangun), who was the most despotic ruler of the Joseon era. Consort Kang Mok-ju (Suk-won) is based on Yeonsangun's real concubine, Jang Nok-su (Suk-yeong), who's supposed to be one of the most evil royal women in Joseon history. But some historians think that her reputation might have been blown out of proportion. The Grand Queen Dowager (the King's grandma), the Queen Dowager (the King's stepmom), the two consorts of the King's dad, and the Royal Secretary are all real people from history, with their names changed a little. What happened to the king's mom is also true to the real history although the real king had no memories of his real mom. He grew up believing his stepmom (the current Queen Dowager) was his real mom. He only finds out about his mom later in his life - a point in time that we have not yet reached in this drama. So the king having memories of his mother at this time is just fiction - like the appearance of a 21st century chef. Another major difference is that there is no recorded account of the real king Yeonsangun being a gourmet connoisseur.
