AH! Ok! That history is really incredible! I remember when watching Rookie Historian that yes, the kings weren't allowed to read the royal records. So it makes sense that he has to find the person in secret. GOOD GRIEF! So much is going on in this drama it's crazy! The mix of history and the fictional is also very interesting. Not using the real names, they can take a little bit of historical license that they probably couldn't if they were using the real ones.

And it is very important that the king is looking for the drafter of the Veritable Records in secret. That is because the Kings were forbidden from reading the records in order to give the drafter the independence of recording the events accurately without any pressure or fear of retribution from the kings. However, Yeonsangun did manage to read the records once. He found that the records were critical of King Sejo's coup, when he took the throne from his young nephew. King Sejo was Yeonsangun's great-grandfather, his own legitimacy relied upon the legitimacy of King Sejo's reign. When he saw that criticism in the records, he had the official historian, and other members of the political faction he belonged to executed or exiled. This event was called First Literati Purge and it happened a few years before the events of this drama. The purge is only briefly mentioned in the drama. Since he could not directly read the records, he is now looking for the drafter in secret to find out what happened to his mother. The king looking for the drafter to find out about his mother never actually happened in real history. The real king had no memory of his mother and grew up believing his step mother (the Queen Dowager) was his real mother. It was only later when one of the court officials (the same one who is shown as the Royal Secretary in this drama) revealed the truth to the king that he found out about his mother. And in his fury, he ordered another bloodbath that was known as the Second Literati Purge. And no, Ji-yeong did not say Grand Prince Jesan took the throne after the revolt. She said it was Grand Prince Ji-myeong who she remembered as the one who took the throne. Grand Prince Ji-myeong was Yeonsangun's younger brother (step-brother). I believe Grand Prince Jesan (the King's father's cousin) was not a historical character.
