[22:10] I do love all the japanese mythology. The monk on the bridge, the kappa, kitsune. So to me it doesn'treally matter if it was a spirit or devil fruit or not. It was beautiful!

2025-02-06 09:44:35 +0000 UTCRegarding the fox Onimaru/Gyukimaru: The fox is three japanese folklore figures in one: 1) Kitsune. Japanese fox spirits that are known for being able to shapehift 2) Onyudo. This is a yokai with the name meaning "big monk". Often they are actually kitsune or tanuki in disguise. 3) Benkei. This is a real life japanese warriror monk who was known for taking the weapons from the samurai he defeated. The fox's dead master Ushimaru is probably a reference to Benkei's master Ushiwakamaru. (For the haikyu lovers: That's what the nicknames Ushiwaka and Benkei from the team shiratorizawa are referencing) Also, in an official character sheet, Oda confirmed that the fox has eaten the mythical zoan fruit: human fruit, type Onyudo. So it is both a human human fruit and a mix of japanese folklore.

During the flashback sequence, a lot of times you see imperfections like it was dirt or scratches that you'd see when watching a movie on a projector screen at the theater. Then when Kawamatsu is at the bridge in his disguise, the snow is clearly paper and the fight is stylized like a movie. Just really cool to see all of this and not something that you'd see often.
