I remember first watching this as a young teenager in the 90's and found it hilarious, but re-watching it 30 years later, you don't appreciate it the same way, but still get caught offguard by something funny that still works

2023-01-16 17:42:03 +0000 UTCKB I think you would appreciate The Young Ones more, which is as well as being funny was completely groundbreaking in the history of UK comedy. There is a great documentary on YT on it link below. https://youtu.be/4reFlDsnGM0 The Young Ones had Rik and ade playing out this dynamic from bottom with different characters. It's silly surreal and absurd in a different and I think overall more interesting way. I personally think it's funnier too. As others have said there are 40 or so films to check out by 'The Comic Strip' which are great too, and the same kind of people are involved. Rik Mayall is one of the greatest comedy talents we've ever produced, and was beloved.

It came along at a time when comedy had perhaps become a bit pompous and started to take itself too seriously, and Bottom flew in the face of all of that and was gleefully puerile, bad taste, ugly, and full of crap jokes, and that was its genius, it was a massive βfuck youβ to good taste by doing everything βwrongβ. And I think the increasingly homogenous, scrubbed clean world of 2023 thatβs perpetually striving for perfection needs that again.
